Coffee Protein Drink

If you’re a coffee lover like I am, the thought of a coffee post-workout drink sounds absolutely heavenly. I recently came accross the most delicious post-workout coffee protein drink, and I owe it all to Emily Skye, fitness guru and creator of the Emily Skye F.I.T. Program. She recently posted the recipe on her Instagram, and I figured I would share for anyone else who is in to fitness! 

Recipe:

  • 1/4 cup coconut/almond/rice milk (I use almond)
  • 1 cup coconut water 
  • 2 coffee shots (I used about 6oz brewed coffee)
  • 1 scoop organic brown rice vanilla protein powder (Sub with your favorite protein powder)
  • 1 tbsp organic cacao powder (cacao contains more nutrients than cocoa so aim for this superfood if you can)
  • 1 tsp organic stevia (optional to sweeten)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ice

Blend together and pour over ice.

Enjoy!

“Drink Your Greens”

Figuring out how to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle while in college is both a huge adjustment and a struggle, to say the least. From squeezing in midnight workouts to shoving 5 dining hall apples in my bag to snack on, I can attest to the fact that it is not easy, especially as a busy person that is always on-the-go. I stumbled upon something that I think all busy health nuts can appreciate, so I decided to share.

Recently, my dad introduced me to my new favorite thing: Daily Greens juice.

I have had an absolute blast trying out all of the flavors, and not only are the juices delicious and good for you, but they are also actually filling. Daily Greens is a perfect on-the-go snack, pre- or post-workout drink, or even a small, nutrient-rich breakfast.

The juices include unique ingredients such as turmeric, madagascar vanilla, and ginger- all absolutely amazing for your health. In addition, the juices are cold-pressed, which means that none of the ingredients are heated during the juicing process, which preserves the nutrients. The juices are also 100% organic, which is another plus.

I would consider Daily Greens the juice for people who may not have previously enjoyed juices- they’re that good! And if you weren’t already sold, a portion of the proceeds from each bottle goes towards organizations that help fight breast cancer. So, next time you’re at Costo, Central Market, or Whole Foods, I encourage you to try one of these juices.

Natural Product Review

Because I love natural and organic products so much, I am constantly trying out new ones. I thought I would review two of my most recent purchases form one of my favorite plant-based Etsy shops, good4you herbals. 

  1. Quarter Life Crisis Balm: This balm is rich and nourishing, and because it includes natural oils such as rosehip oil, kukui nut oil, meadowfoam seed oil, and jojoba oil, it is great as a moisturizer. Personally, I use this balm on my face in the morning before I put on my makeup and let it sink it for about 10-15 minutes. It leaves the skin glowing and it even minimizes blemishes.
  2. Sandalwood Blush Powder: This blush is a perfect subtle color that shows up on the skin as a brown/pink color. It has definitely become a staple item in my beauty routine, and right now it is a part of the 50% off sale in the good4you Etsy shop!

Breathe

I apologize that it has been over a month since my last post. Since then, I have moved to college, had a few weeks of classes, and have had so many new experiences with going to football games, joining organizations, and meeting new people.

One of the classes that all First-Year students are required to take is Personal Responsibility and Wellness. It is all about health and fitness as you probably guessed. A few days ago, my professor had all students sit up in their chairs, close their eyes, and focus on their breathing (and nothing else) for two minutes. She called this “mindful meditation”. I would consider college life extremely fast paced- there is always something to do, somewhere to be, someone to talk to- and it never seems to slow down. My professor said that one thing college students must do in order to be well is to engage in some form of meditation often.

You could call it meditating, resting your mind, or simply relaxing, but doing something that draws the stress from your body and allows you to breathe with no tension or pressure is ideal. Go for a walk when you don’t have a time crunch, spend time reading the Bible, or just close your eyes and focus on your breath for a few minutes. Because when life gets crazy, so does your mind, and it’s so much better for your health to let those thoughts go and live in the present.

True Beauty; “Au Naturel”

I haven’t made a post in a little while because I have been working really hard on making this post perfect, and I am so excited to finally share it with you! I wanted to share some of my favorite natural/organic beauty products with everyone. I love knowing that every product in my daily routine contains real ingredients as opposed to synthetic chemicals that can be harmful to the body.

So, here we go!

1. Hair Care:

  • Shampoo & Conditioner: Acure Shampoo and Conditioner.Typically switching from commercial shampoos/conditioners to natural ones can be difficult for your hair. In the end, it is much healthier for your hair when you use natural products. The adjustment can take a little time and make your hair seem greasy for a period of time. Acure products don’t have that same effect. They smell amazing and a little goes a long way with these products. My hair has never felt healthier.

2. Facial Care:  

  • Face Mask: Facefood by good4you herbals. This has become a staple item in my skincare routine. I use it a couple of times a week and leave it on for 10 minutes. The honey is calming and one of my favorite features is the exfoliation from the seaweed. My skin was glowing after just one use.
  • Toner: Tansy Floral Toner by good4you herbals. This toner is great for blemish prone skin. It can also be used as a refreshing facial mist throughout the day.
  • Spot Treatment: Blemish Balm by good4you herbals. This blemish balm is amazing as a spot treatment that not only minimizes the blemishes but also heals the skin as well. (Note: It may take a little bit longer than spot treatments that you may be used to to completely make the blemish disappear, but it is so much better for your skin and body)

3. Moisturizer:

  

  • Body Lotion: Acure Ultra-Hydrating Body Lotion. This lotion has a very subtle fragrance and absorbs into the skin super quickly. It does an amazing job at repairing dry skin and keeping the skin smooth as well.
  • Facial Moisturizer: Josie Maran Light Argan Oil. This was actually the first truly organic product that I tried. I have been using it for a few years and I absolutely love it. It is super light and never feels heavy or greasy. If you have oily skin, you should still use a moisturizer! My complexion is on the oily side and though it may seem counterintuitive to add oil to an oily face, it actually helps calm my oil because my face is receiving adequate moisture.

4. Shaving Cream:

  

  • Shaving Cream: Acure Foaming Shaving Gel. I have tried Aveeno, EOS, and countless other brands of shaving creams but my sensitive skin would always become red and irritated. The first time I used this, I was completely blown away. It smells amazing, a little goes a long way, and my skin was not irritated at all! I highly recommend trying this.

5. Deodorant:

  • Deodorant: Nourish Organic Deodorant in Almond Vanilla. Out of all of my swaps from “regular” to organic body care, I think this one freaked me out the most. I was concerned about natural deodorants falling short or not working at all. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised. This deodorant smells way better than any that I have ever used before, and it actually works. I workout and run around all day, so I need a deodorant that can hold up throughout my day. This is it. Don’t believe me? I dare you to try it!

  6. Makeup/Beauty:

  • Concealer: Glory Boon Natural ConcealerThis concealer is absolutely amazing. It is called the “heal and conceal” concealer because not only does it cover up blemishes, but it actually heals them as you wear the product. I have never used such a smooth concealer with so much coverage. The best part? It’s not cake-y at all! It’s my miracle product.
  • Foundation: Glory Boon Liquid Foundation in Luna(not pictured). This foundation offers light and even coverage. It is a very sheer and smooth formula so it feels very airy on the skin as opposed to some foundations that can really suffocate the skin.
  • Powder: Glory Boon Mineral Foundation in Cream(not pictured). I finish off my face makeup with a light brush of this powder all over. It has a little shimmer to it, but this is not something that is noticeable or drastic once the powder is applied to the face. The powder offers coverage on its own, and it always works great as a finishing powder over foundation.
  • Lip Care: Sunset Shimmer Balm, Pink Rose Shimmer Balm, and Acai Lip Balm/Scrub(not in shop currently) by good4you herbals. The balms from good4you are truly amazing. Jes, the owner of the shop, uses nourishing oils such as extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil as the bases for all of her balms. They can be used anywhere on the body, but I find myself using them mainly on my lips. I have a few more colors than shown in the photo above, but these are my absolute favorite colors for a nice lip tint.  
  • Perfume: Meadow Aromatherapy Oil by good4you herbalsThis roll-on aromatherapy oil is so authentic in its lavender scent, and as a lavender junkie I am truly obsessed with it. It lasts for a couple of hours, so I keep it in my bag for on-the-go freshening up. Truly an amazing product! (If you aren’t a fan of lavender, good4you also carries a handful of other amazing scents)

When God Throws You Curveballs 

So many times in my life I start to finally feel as if everything is going wonderfully. I am in such a peaceful and calm state, and shortly after, my world gets shaken up like crazy. Have you ever felt that way?

I grew up going to church with my family, but in 2013 I truly gave my heart over to Christ. Ever since then, I would struggle with the question of “why do bad things happen to good people?,” because I felt as though living my life for The Lord would somehow fix everything in my life. I have been gossiped about, been at the wrong place at the wrong time, and have had many cases of people not believing in me. In the past, I never thought that being a Christian would make me perfect, but for some reason I thought it would make all of my problems disappear.

I quickly learned that just because we are Christians does not mean that we don’t live in this same world. The world holds all types of people with many types of belief systems. And regardless of what we believe, we are all going to encounter difficult situations because that is the way that life works. What I have found is that once I put my trust in God and His plan for my life, it is so much easier to believe that everything truly does happen for a reason, according to His purpose.

I will share a personal example of when I recently went through a very difficult situation. Everything about my upcoming first year of college seemed so perfect, and then something happened that was completely out of my control. I will spare you all of the details, but it shook up my whole picture-perfect idea of what college would be like. I asked God- why? Why would He cause me to go through a situation that would make me feel so lost, uncomfortable, and upset? Though this may seem like the exact opposite answer, it’s because He loves me. He wants me to grow, to build my character, and I know that in some crazy way that I may not comprehend right now, He has something better planned for me.

So when God throws you curveballs, what do you do? Pray, stay faithful, and trust in Him. He is looking out for us, and He has a plan laid out for each of us that is better than anything we could ever imagine.

A Sip of Heaven 

Happy 4th of July, everyone!

Recently I have been drinking infused water, and thought I would share about the concept and it’s benefits.

For those who have a difficult time drinking enough water due to bland taste, infused water can help tremendously by making water exciting!

There are also many health benefits that come with this process. Depending on which fruits/veggies/herbs you use, you can create a tasty drink and target health concerns or just boost your health overall.

Ingredients and their benefits:

Lemon: freshens breath, cleanses the liver, balances the body’s pH levels

Lemongrass: boosts mood, balances cholesterol, known to eliminate cancer cells

Strawberry: contains antioxidants, helps burn stored fat, contains potassium

Apple: help maintain bone and tissue health, regulates blood sugar, adds to good bacterias in the intestines

Grapefruit: lowers cholesterol, controls insulin levels, contains vitamin C

Lime: has restorative properties for hair, skin, & nails, anti-carcinogenic, contain calcium and folate(important for women’s health)

Raspberry: anti-inflammatory, contains vitamin C and magnesium, promotes fertility

Rosemary: improves headaches, elevates mood

Orange: helps with blood circulation, contains antioxidants and vitamin C, contains beta-carotene that protects the skin

Cucumber: contains vitamin A and C, brings down blood pressure, curbs appetite, helps soothe muscles, contains antioxidants

Mint: soothes indigestion, contains antioxidants known to help with seasonal allergies

Basil: helps with fatigue, soothing, detoxifies the liver

For my recipe today, I used strawberries, lemons, and a grapefruit.

(Note: I made multiple batches so this amount of fruit is not necessarily the amount to use for one)

I let it sit for about 10-15 minutes and then it was perfectly ready. You can let it infuse throughout the day for added flavor or you can keep adding water to the same fruit throughout the day as well. The possibilities are endless and the concept is great. Find out what flavors you like and experiment a little. It is delicious, fun, and beneficial!
